Andrea Owen is an author, mentor, and professional certified life coach who helps high-achieving women let go of perfectionism, control, and isolation and choosing courage and confidence instead. She has helped thousands of women manage their inner-critic to create loving connections and live their most kick-ass life.

She is the proud author of How To Stop Feeling Like Shit: 14 Habits That Are Holding You Back From Happiness which has been translated into 16 languages, as well as her inaugural book, 52 Ways to Live a Kick-Ass Life: BS Free Wisdom to Ignite Your Inner Badass and Live the Life You Deserve.

When she’s not juggling her full coaching practice or hosting retreats, Andrea is busy competing in triathlons, chasing her 11-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter or making out with her husband, Jason. She is also a retired roller derby player having skated under the name “Veronica Vain”.

Andrea is a returning guest.  I specifically asked her to come back to the show to talk my in-depth on a topic we didn’t have time to dive into in her first interview here - her alcohol use, abuse, and recovery.

Alcohol misuse among women is at an all-time high - because the billion dollar alcohol industry (run by men) is marketing wine to women as a daily coping mechanism.  This is problematic is so many ways.

Regardless of your relationship with alcohol, I think you’ll learn something from this episode.  Andrea is sober and I have 1-2 drinks on a regular basis - so you’re going to get two perspectives in this conversation.

Listen in to hear Andrea share:

  • The danger of stigmatizing alcoholism
  • How wine culture - targeted at women, especially moms - makes it ok to use alcohol as a coping skill
  • The danger of normalizing alcohol use in everyday scenarios
  • The truth about the mental gymnastics & negotiation around alcohol use
  • How she navigated her son’s autism diagnosis and her father’s death sober
  • How sobriety brought her courage and self-confidence to take on anything in life

Whether you are facing a day full of awesome or a day full of crap, you get to choose how you manage your head and your heart #everydamnday.

You can choose to let the universe get the best of you or you can choose to use your best self to get exactly what you need out of the day.

You can choose to see limitations or opportunities every single day.

You can choose to be sucked in and pulled down by circumstances or you can RISE UP and touch what feels positive, productive and purposeful.

You can shrink in fear and trepidation or you can remind yourself that you have already proven yourself to be strong, powerful, capable, resourceful, and resilient over and over and over in this lifetime – and today will be no different.

Every day you get to choose to tap into growth mindset – or not.

I’m not saying this is an easy choice – some days it’s hard, even grueling.  But the more your practice the more your trust yourself – to stretch into possibility and potential and find what you want and what you need even in situations where it seems there is no way to win.

Listen in to learn 4 powerful ways to readily tap into growth mindset #everydamnday.

Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith is an author, speaker, and board-certified physician. She has an active medical practice in Alabama (near the Birmingham area). Dr. Dalton-Smith is a national and international media resource on the mind, body, spirit connection and has been featured in Women's Day, Redbook, and First For Women magazine. She is the author of Set Free to Live and Come Empty (winner 2016 Golden Scroll Nonfiction Book of the Year and 2016 Illumination Award Gold medalist). She is a member of the Christian Medical and Dental Association and a repeat keynote speaker at their annual gathering. She has shared her tips on merging faith and medicine with over 16,000 health care professionals to encourage the current and next generation of doctors to treat the whole person.

I wanted to Dr. Saundra to come on the show to talk about her new book Sacred Rest.  This is a really eye-opening conversation that provides a ton of insight into 7 different types of rest and why each is important.  Dr. Saundra’s work goes much deeper than just the need for sleep.  I think this conversation will be just the permission you might need to incorporate more types of rest (and joy!) into your daily life.

Listen in to hear Saundra share:

  • How ⅔ of the population is sleep deprived
  • The truth behind highly functional, high producing women (hint: low joy, low quality of life)
  • The difference between sleep and rest and why you need both
  • The 7 types of rest - sleep is only 50% one of the types!
  • How to use flow break cycles to have the work rest ratio to recover the energy you need to have energy during all waking hours
  • How to have rest periods even in the midst of family/kid chaos, as well as model rest to your kids

Lack of true connection in our lives is a verified epidemic - meaning there are actual studies that show that we (women especially) are feeling more isolated, lonely, and depressed than ever before.

The most beautiful I have witnessed since starting the Shameless Mom Academy is the connection between so many of you.  It started in our free private Facebook group.  It carried over into our MOMENTUM Mamas membership community, and it was the most magical part of Shameless Mom Con.

Connection with other women is what saves us from ourselves.  Yet, we often really struggle to find connections that are true and deep and meaningful.

In this episode, I share 6 symptoms of lack of connection - everything from jealousy to low worth, to holding on to secrets.  Then I walk you through 6 ways you can implement and integrate more conscientious connections in your life. Lastly, I give you 5 ways to take the first step toward more meaningful connections starting today.

If you feel like you need to find “your people”, this episode is for you.

Bonnie Mae is a Shameless Mom to two sons ages 10 and 12, as well as a survivor and warrior of an abusive relationship that spanned 10 years. She has a passion for advocating for the needs and safety of her children as well as herself. She has an associates degree in human services.  She used to think she wasn’t using putting her degree to good use - until recently. She recently took the bold, brave steps to become an educator and speaker to youth and young adults  - teaching around all issues related to domestic violence.  She teaches the warning signs of abusive behavior, offers advice on how to safely get out of abusive relationships, and coaches around the impact of abuse on one’s life.   She speaks at various organizations, as well as middle and high schools.

Bonnie reached out to me a few months ago when I said I wanted to broach the subject of domestic violence on the show.  I’m deeply honored that she took the brave step to share her story and her lessons with us all.  Her story will have ripple effects that she will never see - that may well save lives of other Shameless Moms.

Listen in to hear Bonnie share:

  • How she internalized emotional abuse and believed she as worthless as her husband told her she was
  • Why she stayed with an abusive partner for 7 years - and how abusers manipulate their victims
  • Her rock bottom moment and how she finally got her kids and herself safely out of her husband’s grip
  • The steps leading up to her terminating her ex-husband’s parental rights
  • How she talks to her kids about their family’s abusive past
  • The impactful new direction her past is giving to her current life
  • Her top recommendation to women currently in abusive relationships

One of the themes I’ve been seeing repeatedly in our community recently is around feeling stuck in roles that feel out of alignment with our core values.  This shows up in our jobs when we see that companies we work for don’t truly stand behind their mission statements.

This happens in our families when we see our siblings, parents or in-laws not acting in high integrity.

This happens in our friendships when we see the women around us judging and gossiping and putting other women down.

This is hard to watch and even harder to be a part of when we feel we are right in the middle of it all.   It often feels like a massive breach of our own integrity - which feels confusing and really conflicting.

I want to challenge you to step back from these situations for a moment to get a better view of what’s going on and consider the ways you can RISE UP when you’re in the middle of situations which feel our of integrity and out of alignment with your personal and professional core values.

Here are 7 ways to start to RISE UP in work and life:

  1. Position yourself as a leader
  2. Unapologetically own your strengths, gifts, and ZOG
  3. Unapologetically own what you suck at
  4. Know what you stand for
  5. Know what you don’t stand for
  6. Know the difference between tattling and documenting/reporting
  7. Be humble and gracious, while still standing in your power (rather than shrinking in gratitude)

Listen in to this full episode to hear the deep dive on these 7 techniques.

In this episode, I had the honor of talking to two powerful leaders who love to talk politics - even though they are on opposite sides of many issues.  If you struggle to have compassionate conversations around politics with friends & family who have differing beliefs and belief systems, this conversation will be really eye-opening and helpful.

Sarah Stewart Holland (from the left) has always loved politics, although her political opinions

have changed d

rastically over the years. She worked in politics and on Capitol Hill before

moving back to her hometown of Paducah, KY, where she served on the Paducah

City Commission. She is happily married and the mother of three sons. Sarah likes her bourbon

on ice, her romantic dramas with a British accent and her iPhone fully charged.

Beth Silvers (from the right) owns and operates Checking In with Beth Silvers, a life and

business coaching practice. She has been recognized as one of Ohio’s Most Powerful and

Influential Women by the Ohio Diversity Council, a Human Resources GameChanger by

Workforce Magazine, and one of Cincinnati’s Forty Under 40 business leaders. Beth lives in

Union with her husband, Chad; daughters Jane (8) and Ellen (3), and miniature schnauzer, Lucy. She loves people, politics, poetry, and watermelon.

Listen in to hear Beth and Sarah share:

  • The typically strongest values on the right vs the left
  • How your family of origin impacts your politics
  • The power of observing vs judging
  • The value of getting curious instead of confrontational
  • The power of acknowledging and addressing shared concerns and shared values
  • Why people of privilege need to have the uncomfortable conversations
  • How to navigate difficult conversations with grace
  • Why it’s important for moms to be politically engaged

Shameless Mom Con was last weekend and the power, momentum, and magic that came out of 3 days of Shameless Mom togetherness is enough to light my life - like forever.

I had no idea how overwhelmingly powerful this event would be until it started.  And from the moment it started - when 30 MOMENTUM Mamas descended on my hotel suite, shortly followed by another 20+ Shameless Moms - it was very clear that this was going to be a life-changing few days.  Within our first 10 minutes together I felt like we were all long lost friends - and maybe we were???  Maybe we had all been looking for each other for a very long time.

I know many of you could not attend the event, so I wanted to bring some of Shameless Mom Con to you.  In this episode, I’m going to share some highlights from the event, as well as share 6 major Shameless Mom Con takeaways with you.  These 6 takeaways have the potential to shift your life in big ways.  Take notes!

Susie Pettit has been helping women live lives they love for over 10 years. She is the host of the podcast Love Your Life Show and owner of the Wellness Company Strength: Mind & Body, LLC. She is a certified Life + Wellness Coach and a mom of 3 teenage sons.

Susie is passionate about helping women live lives that feel as good on the inside as they look on the outside. She spent more than half her life living a life she did not love; as a people pleaser, codependent perfectionist, trying desperately to win an award for ‘Martyr of the Year’.

Luckily she hit rock bottom and now has the breadth of experience to teach first hand about setting healthy boundaries, beating your inner critic, conscious parenting, and how to use mindfulness-based tools to beat overwhelm and anxiety. She uses two foundational frameworks: Her 5 Pillars of Wellness and the Thought Model.

Listen in to hear Susie share:

  • Being raised by my controlling and manipulative parents and building a life based on their standards, not her own identity
  • How she stopped looking for external validation
  • All her worst fears came true, she hit rock bottom, and she rose from the ashes
  • How people pleasers are actually people deceivers
  • The thought-model around the think-feel-act loop that gives you control in the most challenging moments in your life and how to use the “power pause”
  • Why having no contact with her parents and siblings is the most loving relationship she can have with them
  • How to increase your emotional intelligence and emotional literacy
  • How to get out of your own way during challenging communication with others
  • When you should treat your parents like toddlers - yes, really...
